![]() It was a summer day and the temperature was in the high 20deg C so I made it a slow, easy journey on the way in. I came in from about 15kms out of the CBD and used mainly bikeways which lead into the CBD from most directions these days. Well, we’re into the fourth paragraph of this post and you may be asking yourself why this fool is rambling about art on a bicycling blog but I’m about to show you the tantalising intersection between riding and enjoying some art because instead of the drudgerous cycle of pain that is driving and parking and exiting parking and driving again, I rode my bike to GOMA instead. I am, of course, talking about the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) at South Brisbane where I’m going to see some of Japan’s finest – Yayoi Kusama’s Life is the Heart of a Rainbow exhibition. And maybe not knowing what you’re really looking at is the best way to appreciate art anyway.įurther, if you live in this fine city of BrizVegas, you’re in luck because you have what is surely one of the finest art related establishments in Queensland if not the whole of Australia. Even if you haven’t been trained what to look for, making your own sense of the art in front of you is one of the most profound, calming, inspiring, escapist, perspective adding and enriching things you can do almost any day. Still, none of that should stop me or anyone else immersing themselves in art. Try as I did to draw and paint when I was a younger human, life and other interests took over and my artistic aspirations along with my meager skills shriveled and died like an abandoned pot plant. The fact that I spend most of my time using the opposite side of my brain required to create art is testament to that. The Yayoi exhibition is children-friendly (as is the gallery itself), with hands on activities and child-friendly meals at the onsite cafe.I’m sure as eggs not an art aficionado much less an artist. ![]() Keep calm, it’s kid friendlyĭuring the summer break, getting kids out of the house and out of your hair is essential. So why has it taken so long for Yayoi’s incredible work to become popular – is it the invention of social media? Sure, the bright colours and eye-catching patterns make the perfect backdrop for your next social media display photo. She was there in the heat of the pop art movement, and used to hang out with Andy Warhol in NYC. Take your time, there’s no need to rush back out. Escape the baking midday sun at GOMA, where the thermostat is always set to a comfortable 21 degrees. Summer is hot, GOMA is coldīrisbane is a subtropical city – and summer is a time of heat and humidity. This is art in a serious art gallery after all. Now, take your duty of covering every possible inch of the once-white room very, very seriously. When you enter the Obliteration Room at GOMA a sheet of coloured stickers will be handed to you. Yayoi wants YOU! Well, not you specifically, but you know what we mean. Here the exhibition is free - just turn up to GOMA and check it out. There’s no need for that kind of ticket battle in Brisbane. It’s freeĪ ticketed Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition in Los Angeles sold out in an hour, with 150,000 people jumping online in the first five minutes to try their luck. This exhibition features three of them – one you can actually step inside and explore, a special piece at QAGOMA commissioned for the gallery back in 2002. One of her signature pieces (that people go gaga for) are the infinity mirror rooms. Here’s 6 reasons why you need to put Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow on your summer bucket list. The exhibition was co-curated with the National Gallery of Singapore, and among it features six incredible works that QAGOMA actually owns. ![]() Until February 11, Australia’s largest modern art gallery’s walls will feature works spanning 70 years of Kusama’s colourful career. Queen of the dots, contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is best known for her colourful work ‘obliterating’ objects with spots and infinity nets. ![]() 6 reasons to enter Yayoi Kusama’s spotty world at GOMA this summerĭo like you like colour, free things and air-conditioned comfort in summer?
